Marathon World Record goes under 2:04!
Last Sunday, Sept 28th, Ethiopian Haile Gebreselassie broke his own world record in the marathon with a 2:03:59 in the Berlin Marathon.
The lead group came through the half at 1:02:04, with Haile running a negative split for the second half - 1:01:55.
The break down.... Pace per mile: 4 minutes and 45 seconds
Which is equivalent to a:
5k time of 14:46 5k
a 10k time of 29:31 10k
and 71 second per 1/4 mile
Which is equivalent to:

Treadmill vs Outdoor running
There is less energy expenditure when running on a treadmill due to several factors:
1) No wind/air resistance
2) Assistance from the treadmill. More specifically in the backwards pull of the leg while on the ground, which is a primary force that propels one forward during outdoor running.
3) No turns.
4) No, or minor, downhills.
For these reasons limiting the amount of runs on a treadmill is important when striving for top performances in a race. Aside from the law of Specificity of Training, which exposes the differences mentioned above, too much treadmill running also results in a firing pattern that is slightly different than ground running and thus leads to an over-all reduction in running economy.
However, studies show raising the incline to 1% brings the overall energy expenditure close to equal to ground running. When treadmill running is the only option, at the very least make this your new habit! It will take a few runs on the treadmill for this to become as comfortable as before, 1% can feel like a lot, but stick with it and your outdoor running will benefit! | |
Stadiums vs Hill Repeats
In general, hill repeats are preferred over stadium stairs for two primary reasons.
1) A hill allows ones stride length to be natural, as opposed to the stadium stairs/benches which may force one to shorten or extend their stride outside of their comfort zone.
2) Running up a hill involves increased lower leg recruitment due to the angle that the foot is placed at landing. This then requires the calves to stretch, provide a stretch-reflex contraction, and thus adapt and strengthen from the workout. Stadium running has the feet landing nearly flat and thus little work is done by the lower legs.
The benefits of both can be profound, most importantly the strengthening of hip flexor muscles and over-all running efficiency, though for the full benefit of such high energy output hills will reap more benefits when it comes to race performance.
Do note a proper warm-up and extensive stretch routine, particularly in the calves, is very important prior to a hill repeat workout. Also, for those who suffer from minor lower leg problems stadiums may be more comfortable due to the minumal usage of lower leg muscles. |
Barefoot vs Running Shoes
For everyday runners (those of us wearing running shoes) the noted benefits of barefoot running can still be attained to a small degree by the inclusion of short bouts of barefoot running. This can be simply adding a few barefoot strides at the end of your run, or by gradually increasing the length of a barefoot run - at the most doing this once per week. Of course the terrain will need to be suitable for this and one should first start on softer surfaces before moving on to pavement.
The benefits of including barefoot running are:
1) increasing your sensitivity in your feet, thus improving your balance and efficiency.
2) allowing your legs to work with a stride length that is most natural to your body (keep in mind running shoes can take off 1/4 to 2 inches off of your running stride) and thus allowing for increased flexibility and improved muscle firing capacity.
3) utilizing the noted improvement in running economy (it has been found that running barefoot results in 4% less oxygen consumption than shod running when both are done at the same pace)
If done gradually, and safely, barefoot running will not only help but is even fun to do! As barefoot runner Ken Bob said when asked 'Why run barefoot?', "Why run with shoes? Were you born with shoes? Did you grow shoes on your feet as a response to running? What makes you believe that shoes are necessary?". A bit of this philosophy is worth some thought, though for most, a bit is enough... |
Red Bandanna 5k Run/Walk on Boston College campus, Saturday, Oct 25th
Good afternoon everyone!!
As many of you know, I lost my 24-year old brother Welles on September 11, 2001. He was an equities trader in Tower 2, but a trained volunteer firefighter in my home town of Upper Nyack, NY. Having saved an estimated 18 people, he became known as the Man in the Red Bandanna and his story continues to spread! In 2006, he became the FIRST citizen to be posthumously made an honorary member of the FDNY. It was certainly a tragedy and the worst thing that could happen to a family, but we are trying to turn the circumstances around and do something outstanding to honor him.
A few years back, we established the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust to raise money for youth organizations across the country, and now around the world. Three years ago, we held our first Red Bandanna 5k Run/Walk which has turned out to be our largest annual fundraiser, by far. It is a little over 3 mile walk/run at the Campus Loop around Boston College - where my late brother, Welles (Class of '99), my sister, Honor (Class of '01), and I (Class of '06) all completed our undergrad. Go Eagles!
This year the race is taking place at 9a.m. on Saturday, October 25th, 2008. Last year we raised over $25,000 with this event!! This year we have our hearts set on $35,000. Please help us reach our goal!!! I also have a personal goal of $5,000 - so if you can't attend the race, but would like to sponsor me (please!), you can do so through: http://www.active.com/donate/REDBANDANNARUN/PaigeH
So many of you sponsored me last year; I GREATLY appreciate that and can only hope for your continued support this year! You can also set up your own fundraising page! http://www.active.com/donate/REDBANDANNARUN
I am writing to encourage all that can attend, and want to run or walk to show your support, to sign up to do so through www.redbandannarun.com. For those of you in other states who cannot attend the race, I encourage you to donate to our cause, also possible through that site or my fundraiser page. You can also learn more about my brother's trust and which organizations are recipients of our donations.
We will reach our goals through word of mouth, so please also spread the word to your friends, families and co-workers! I will be there, and I hope that you will join me and my family!!
Thank you, everyone!
