Bio-mechanical Video Gait Analysis

The Boston Running Center's video gait analysis is ideal for those looking to:
  • improve their running form
  • gather detailed information to help find possible causes for a re-occuring running injury
  • or improve running efficiency through custom designed exercise routines that are based on the findings of the gait analysis.

(Measurements taken are those that our coaches feel are most important to a runner's bio-mechanical profile. This analysis should not replace a thorough examination by a sports medicine doctor who specializes in running injuries.)

Video Gait Analysis

Outdoor recording:

This involves a 15-20 min outdoor recording session to be performed at an outdoor site for ground running recording, typically in and around Brookline/Cambridge.  For this, participants run 16-20 short periods of 10-15 seconds each for side, front, and rear views.  Participants must be able to run 6-8 min/mile pace for 10-15 seconds at a time.  This is weather and daylight dependent so please provide suitable availability.  Running shoes, skin tight pants, and a tight top are required.

Indoor recording:

This involves a 15-20 minute indoor session to be performed at the Boston Running Center for treadmill video recording. Total running time is 2-3 minutes and involves barefoot running for accurate measurements of ankle eversion and inversion angles.  Participants must be able to run 6-8 min/mile pace for atleast 1 minute.  Shorts, cut off above the knees, are required.

Gait Analysis Review Session

The results are typically analyzed in 7-10 days, at which point the client meets with the administrator to go over the results and recommendations.  Athletic clothes are recommended.  Allow 30-45 minutes for this.  The review session is included with the VGA.

Functional Assessment

Intended for those looking for a more thorough analysis, the functional assessment is a series of measurements and tests to help deduce deficiencies that may be reducing one's ability to healthy or efficiently function during the act of running.  This includes measurements and analysis of posture, muscle length-tension relationships, flexibilty and strength imbalances, and other nuances that may not be captured during a VGA and of which may contribute to a faulty gait pattern.   A recommended program to correct any deficiencies is provided. The assessment is performed in the center, and can be performed during the same session as the indoor recording of the VGA.  Allow 30-45 minutes for the assessment and a 20-30 minute review session to be held 1-5 business days afterwards.

VGA Follow-ups

Follow up sessions are available for those wishing to assess improvement.  It is recommended to have at least 1 follow up session 2-4 months after the initial analysis.  Recordings and measurements taken are only those that were deficient in the original session.  Please allow for 75 minutes for this (20 min for recording, 30 min for the analysis, and 20 min for the follow-up).

Soft Tissue Assessment

This hour long session with a BRC massage therapist is used to identify exact locations and severities of soft tissue tightness, adhesions, contracture knots, sensitivity, and restrictions throughout the body. The results of this assessment is reviewed by the VGA administrator and is analyzed, along with the VGA and Functional Assessment results, to form a more complete picture of potential causes of recurring pain or inefficiencies in the runners gait. Note, this session is only for assessing potential causes of injury and is not a massage meant for treatment or relaxation.

Basic Gait Analysis

This option is for those simply looking for a trained eye to watch their form and provide immediate feedback and recommendations. The 45 minute session with exercise physiologist, and Gait Analysis Administrator, Joseph McConkey involves 5-10 minutes of running along with other tests and assessments that apply to the bio-mechanics of the individual. Each participant will be given hands-on instruction on the specific steps needed to improve his/her form, as well as a follow-up email summarizing the findings and, if applicable, providing detailed descriptions, pictures, and videos of the exercises recommended. Note, no video is taken for this service.

Mail-in Video Gait Analysis

Don't live in Boston, but have your own video recorder? Simply follow our specific mail-in VGA guidelines, send us your videos, and receive results in 7-10 days. These are the same guidelines we use for our recordings, and after the follow-up phone call with your VGA administrator, you'll have results you understand and clear 'next steps' to follow. Note, no payment is due until AFTER your videos have been received.

Bio-mechanical Video Gait Analysis Packet: With-in 7-10 days after all recording is completed participants receive the following via mail, pick-up at the center, or at the time of the review session:

  • a CD of all video taken
  • over 40 pictures, with measurements, at important points in your stride
  • comparison chart of your measurements versus the norm
  • written summary points and recommended courses of action
  • pictures and descriptions of the recommended exercises, drills, and stretches based on the results of your gait analysis
  • a reference section detailing how each measurement was calculated and what exactly is being measured
  • 1 follow-up email, or 20 min phone conversation, with the analysis administer

Recent Testimonial

"For almost two years I wrestled with chronic, often severe knee pain and tendinitis associated with running. In pursuit of a cure I saw 2 different orthopedists, 2 physical therapists, and a chiropractor, with no lasting improvement. I was on the verge of giving up running altogether when by chance I heard about the Boston Running Center and contacted Joe about a gait analysis. In two short sessions Joe helped me identify a number of fundamental flaws in my gait. By adjusting my mechanics and following Joes customized routine of exercises and stretches I was able to completely eliminate the pain in the course of a few months. Its not an exaggeration to say that Joes gait analysis saved my running career." - D. Steinberg
